Thrombopoietinpromotesthegrowthanddifferentiation(proliferation)ofmegakaryocyteswhichproduceplatelets.TPOR(Thrombopoietinreceptor),whichisalsocalledc-MPL(Myeloproliferativeleukemiaprotein)orCD110,isareceptorforthrombopoietin.AnditissuggestedthatTPORmayalsoplayaroleinthemaintenanceofhematopoieticstemcells,whicharestemcellslocatedwithinthebonemarrowthathavethepotentialtodevelopintoredbloodcells,whitebloodcells,megakaryocytesandplatelets.Thisreceptorisactivatedwhenthrombopoietinproteinbindstoit,andtheactivatedreceptorstimulatesasignalingpathwaycalledtheJAK/STATpathway,whichtransmitssignalsfromoutsidethecelltothecell"snucleusandisimportantforcontrollingtheproductionofbloodcells.
