Acytoskeletalorscaffoldproteinfamilynamed“septin”hasbeenshowntobeinvolvedindiversephenomenainthelivingbody,cludingcelldivision.Theterm“septin”isderivedfrom“septation,”whichmeansdivision.TheproteinwasdiscoveredasaGTP-boundprotein(apolymer)indispensableforthedivisionofeastcells.Severaltodozensofseptinsubunitsarelinkedtogethertoformfilamentstensofnanometersinlength.Multiplesuchfilamentscombinetoformstructuresassumingtheshapesofribbons,ringsorspirals,measuringontheorderofsubmicronsinsize.Inmulticellularorganisms,septinisknowntobeinvolvedincelldivisionaswellasindiversecellfunctionsafterdifferentiation,althoughtheexactnatureofitsactionsremaintobedetermined.Amongthemembersofthemammalianseptinfamily,septin4(H5)isuniqueintermsofitsprimarystructureandexpressionpattern.Whileitsexpressionhasalsobeendemonstratedintheheart,liverandtestis,itismostprominentlyexpressedinsomeneuronsandglialcells.Ithasbeensuggestedthatseptin4maynotusuallybeinvolvedincelldivision.Abnormallevelsorlocationsofseptinexpressionhavebeenreportedinhumanswithcancer,degenerativeneurologicaldiseases(e.g.,Parkinsonism),malesterility,etc.
