VaricellaisanacuteviraldiseasecausedbytheVaricellazostervirus(VZV)thatbelongstotheherpesvirusfamily.Thewell-knowndiseasebeginswithfeverandmalaiseandamaculopapularrashthatchangeswithinhourstovesicles.Lesionspustulate,crustandhealslowlyovera3weekperiod.Thediseaseisrarelyfatal,however,themostcommoncauseofdeathinadultsistheprimaryviralpneumonia,andinchildren,secondarybacterialinfectionsorcentralnervoussysteminvolvement.Childrenwithacuteleukemiaorimmunocompromisedpersonsareathigherriskofageneraldisseminationofthediseasewithfataloutcome.Newbornsthatareinfectedafter5to10days,andtheonesbornfrommothersthatwereinfected5daysbeforeortwodaysafterbirth,candevelopseveregeneralisedvaricellawithamortalityrateof30%.Infectionatthebeginningofpregnancyrarelygivescongenitalmalformations.
