Trichinosis(alsocalledtrichinellosis)iscausedbynematodes(roundworms)ofthegenusTrichinella.InadditiontotheclassicalagentTrichinellaspiralis,whichisfoundworldwideinmanycarnivorousandomnivorousanimals,fourotherspecies(T.pseudospiralis,T.nativa,T.nelsoni,andT.britovi)arerecognized.TrichinosisisacquiredbyingestingmeatcontainingcystsofTrichinella.Afterexposuretogastricacidandpepsin,thelarvaearereleasedfromthecystsandinvadethesmallbowelmucosawheretheydevelopintoadultworms(female2.2mminlength,males1.2mm).After1week,thefemalesreleaselarvaethatmigratetothestriatedmuscleswheretheyencyst.Encystmentiscompletedin4to5weeksandtheencystedlarvaemayremainviableforseveralyears.Ingestionoftheencystedlarvaeperpetuatesthecycle.Trichinosisinfectionoccursworldwide,butismostcommoninpartsofEuropeandtheUnitedStates.Lightinfectionsmaybeasymptomatic.Formildtomoderateinfections,mostsymptomssubsidewithinafewmonthswhereasfatigue,weakness,anddiarrhoeamaylastformonths.Inseverecases,deathcanoccur.Infectionmaybeidentifiedby
