Taeniasoliumisatapewormof2-7minlengthwhichresidesinthesmallintestineofhumansbutalsootheranimalspecies(monkeys,hamsters).Thetapewormsproduceproglottids(lessthan1,000,andeachwith50,000eggs)whichmature,becomegravid,detachfromthetapeworm,andmigratetotheanusorarepassedinthestool.Theeggscontainedinthegravidproglottidsandpassedwiththefaecescansurviveformonthstoyearsintheenvironment.Afteringestionofasuitableintermediatehost(pigsandotheranimals,includinghumans)theeggsreleasetheoncosphere,invadetheintestinalwallandmigratetothestriatedmuscles,intothebrain,liverandothertissuesofthehostwheretheydevelopincysticerci.Inthehumanintestine,acysticercusdevelopsover2monthsintoanadulttapeworm,whichcansurviveforupto25years.TheimportantparasiticinfectioncausedbyTaeniasoliumiscysticercosiswhichmayinvolvetheeyeandthecentralnervoussystem.TheswinetapewormTaeniasoliumisworldwideindistribution.Prevalenceishigherinpoorercommunitieswherehumansliveinclosecontactwithpigsandeatundercookedpork,andisveryrareinMuslimcountries.ThemainsymptomofTaeniasis(onlymild)isoftenthepassage(passive)ofproglottids.ThemostimportantfeatureofTaeniasissoliumistheriskofdevelopmentofCysticercosis.Infectionmaybeidentifiedby:
