VEGF(vascularendothelialgrowthfactor)isahighlyspecificgrowthfactorinvascularendothelialcellsthatwasdiscoveredintheculturesupernatantofacelllinederivedfromtheanteriorlobeofthehumanpituitarygland,andtheresultsofgeneanalyseshaveshownthatitisthesameasVPF(vascularpermeABIlityfactor),whichwasdiscoveredatthesametime.VEGFstimulatesallstepsinangiogenesis,includinganincreaseintheproliferation,migration,andproteaseactivityofculturedvascularendothelialcells,andtheformationofblood-vessel−likestructuresincollagengel,anditstimulatesangiogenesisandvascularpermeabilityinvivoaswell.
Sinceitisproducedandsecretedbymanytumorcells,anditsreceptorischieflyexpressedbyvascularendothelialcells,itisthoughttobeassociatedwithtumorangiogenesis.Asaresult,VEGFhascometobeknownasanimportantmodulatorofbloodvesselformationintheembryoandofangiogenesisinadulttissue.
