EnzymeimmunoassayforthequalitativedeterminationofIgMclassantibodiesagainstMumpsvirusinhumanserumorplasma(citrate).MumpsvirusesareRNAvirusesofthefamilyParamyxoviridae.Thevirionsaresphericalparticlesof150-250nmindiameterconsistingofaribonucleoproteinwithhelicalsymmetryandenvelopedbymatrixproteinandalipidbilayerwhichcontainstwospikelinestructures:viralhemagglutinin(H)andviralneuraminidase(N).Mumpsvirusinvolvesprimarilytheparotidandrelatedsalivaryglands;howeverinfectioncanleadtoCNSdiseaseandaccumulationofthevirusinCSF.Mumps(EpidemicParotitis)isanacutecontagiousviraldiseasemostlyoccuringinchildren.Nearly50%ofallinfectionsaresubclinical.Thehighestincidenceofclinicalmanifestationsisfoundintheagegroupof4to15years.Secondaryinfectionsarerarebecauseoflong-lastingimmunity.10to35%ofmumpscasesdeveloporchitiswhichoccursnearlyalwaysafterpuberty.Theprocessismostlyunilateralandtheprognosisusuallygood.MumpsvirushasbeenoneofthemostimportantcausesofviralCNSdisease(meningitisandencephalitis)inUSA;vaccineadmiNISTrationhasgreatlyreduceditsincidence.
