ChromograninA(CgA)isa49kDaacidicglycoproteinconsistingof439aminoacidsencodedonchromosome14.Asamemberofthegraninfamily,chromograninAisstoredinandsecretedfromsecretorygranulesofendocrineandneuroendocrinecellsalongwiththeirhormonesandneurotransmitters.Ithasbeendemonstratedinanumberofnormalandneoplasticendocrinetissues.AnelevatedlevelofcirculatingchromograninAwasfoundtobeamarkeroftumorsofneuroendocrineorigin.

ChromograninAcanbeusedforthefollowingindications:

  1. Asaverysensitive(83%)andhighlyspecific(96%)markerintheevaluationofaconfirmedorsUSPectedpheochromocytoma.DrugsthatarecommonlyusedinthediagnosisandtreatmentofpheochromocytomahaveanegligibleeffectontheplasmachromograninAlevels,whichisaconsiderableadvantageofchromograninAovercatecholaminesforthemeasurementpurposes.
  2. Verificationoftumororigin.HighchromograninAlevelsindicatethatthetumorisofneuroendocrineorigin.
