Galactose-deficientIgA1(Gd-IgA1)attractsalotofattentionasacriticaleffectormoleculeinthepathogenesisandprogressionofIgAnephropathy(IgAN)inrecentstudies.IthasbeensuggestedthatseveralO-linkglycan-modifiedregionsexistintheheavychainhingeregionofhumanIgA1moleculeandthatGd-IgA1circulatesinthebloodofpatientswithpathologicalconditionofIgAN.Themeasuringsystemusingsnail(helixaspersa;HAA)lectin,thatisextractedfromsnails,hasbeenusedinnumerousstudiesinthepastanditwasrevealedthatserumlevelsofGd-IgA1inpatientswithIgANaresignificantlyelevatedcomparedtothelevelsofhealthysubjectsorpatientswithrenaldiseasesotherthanIgAN.Thus,theimportanceandpurposeofmeasuringserumGd-IgA1levelhavebeengraduallyrecognizedfromsuchstudies.
