Fibronectinisanubiquitousextracellularglycoproteinthatexistsinasolubleforminbodyfluidsandinaninsolubleformintheextracellularmatrix.Itplaysamajorroleinmanyimportantphysiologicalprocesses,suchasembryogenesis,woundhealing,hemostasisandthrombosis.Fibronectinissecretedasadimerwithamonomermolecularweightof220-250kDa.Fibronectiniscomposedofthreetypesofmodulesorganizedintofunctionaldomainsthatareresistanttoproteolysisandcontainbindingsitesforextracellularmatrixproteins,cellsurfacereceptorsandcirculatingbloodproteins.Ingeneral,fibronectinissynthesizedbyandpresentaroundfibroblasts,endothelialcells,chondrocytes,glialcells,andmyocytes.Fibronectinisabundantintheconnectivetissuematrixandinbasementmembranes.Extremelyhighlevelsoftheglycoproteinarefoundinplasma.Fibronectinhasbeenreportedtoplayamajorroleinthecardiovascularsystem,beingfunctionallyinvolvedinbloodclotting,atherosclerosis,hypertensionandmyocardialinfarction.Fibronectin"simportanceduringcancerprogressionhasfurtherbeenshown.ItrepresentsanactiveelementintheprocessofTcellactivationintheimmunecascadetriggeredbyorgantransplantation.Fetalfibronectinhasbeendescribedasapredictoroftermlab.
