Cytomegalovirus(CMV)isamemberoftheherpesvirusgroup(Betasubfamily,DNAvirusof150-200nm).ThesevirusesshareacharacteristicABIlitytoremaindormantwithinthebodyoveralongperiod.InitialCMVinfection,whichmayhavefewsymptoms,isalwaysfollowedbyaprolonged,inapparentinfectionduringwhichthevirusresidesincellswithoutcausingdetectabledamageorclinicalillness.Severeimpairmantofthebody´simmunesystembymedicationordiseaseconsistentlyreactivatesthevirusfromthelatentordormantstate.CMVisfounduniversallythroughoutallgeographiclocationsandsocioeconomicgroups,andinfectsbetween50%and85%ofadults.CMVinfectionismorewidespreadindevelopingcountriesandinareasoflowersocioeconomicconditions.Forthevastmajorityofpeople,CMVinfectionisnotaseriousproblem,butitistocertainhigh-riskgroups:
- theunbornbabyduringpregnancy
- peoplewhoworkwithchildren
- immunocompromisedpersons,suchasorgantransplantrecipientsandpersonsinfectedwithHIV
