Chlamydiaearenomotile,Gramnegativeandobligatoryintracellulargrowingbacteriawhichformcharacteristicinclusionswithinthecytoplasmofparasitizedcells.TheyareeasilyvisIBLeinthelightmicroscope.ThreedifferentChlamydiaspeciespathogenicforhumansareknown:Chlamydiatrachomatis,ChlamydiapneumoniaeandChlamydiapsittaci,andonespeciesonlypathogenicforanimals(C.pecorum).Chlamydiatrachomatisisthemostprevalentagentofsexuallytransmitteddiseasesworldwide(400-500millioncases)andthenumberofinfectionsisconstantlygrowing.PregnantwomeninfectedwithC.trachomatismaytransmitthesebacteriaduringchildbirth,causingconjunctivitisorpneumoniainnewborns.Untreatedcasesofchlamydialinfectioncanleadtochronicsalpingitis,possiblyresultinginectopicpregnancyorinfertility.Inmales,C.trachomatisisamajorcauseofnon-gonococcalurethritis.AsevereprobleminChlamydiainfectionsisthefrequentasymptomaticinsidiouscoursewhichmayresultintheinitiationofchronicdiseases.Inmanyinstancesprimaryinfectionsarenotrecognizedandonlythesequelaecausedbyascended,persistingagentsarediagnosed.Infectionmaybeidentifiedby
