Ascaridaearebignematodes.Themaleindividualsareupto25cm,thefemaleonesareupto40cmlong.AscarislumbricoidesisamongtheAscaridaethespecieswiththehighestimportanceforhumanmedicine,becauseitistheonlyonewithhumansasmainhost.Thesexuallymatureroundwormlivesinthesmallintestine.Thefemalesproduceupto200000eggsdaily,whichattaintotheenvironmentbyfaeces.Infectiouslarvaedevelopinsidetheeggsandafteroralingestiontheyhatchintheupperpartofthesmallintestine.Theypenetratethewalloftheintestineandgetintothevenousbloodwithwhichtheygetintoliverandlung,wheretheyleavethevesselsandskinintheaveoles.Thelarvaemigrateintothetracheaandthroughthepharynxafterswallowingbacktothesmallintestinewherethematurationtotheadultwormtakesplace.Ca.10-12weeksafterinfestationtheroundwormswillbeexcretedwithfaeces.Theadultwormlivesforaround18months.AscarislumbricoidesisoneofthemostabundantexciterofInfectiousDiseasesworldwide.MainendemicareasareEasternAsia,AfricaandMiddleandSouthAmerica.Childrenaremoreoftenaffectedthanadults.TheinfestationleadstoAscariasismostlywithlatentprogression.Themigratinglarvaecanleadtoinflammatory,eosinophileinfiltrationofthelungandcausecough,dyspnoeaandlightfever.Conglomeratesofthewormscancauseintestinalblockage.Ifthewormsmigrateintogall,pancreasorstomachthecorrespondingclinicalsymptomsresult.Thepresenceofaninfectionmaybeidentifiedby:
