Fetuin-A,alsoknownasalpha-2-HSglycoprotein,isa59kDaglycoproteinthatconsistsoftwoaminoterminalcystatindomainsandasmallercarboxyl-terminaldomain.Fetuin-Aissynthesizedbytheliverandsecretedintobloodstream,whereitsconcentrationinadultmammalsrangesfrom0.5–1.0g/L.Fetuin-Aoccursinhighserumconcentrationduringfetallifeandinvolvesinproteaseinhibitoryactivitiesanddevelopment-associatedregulationofcalciummetabolismandosteogenesis.ItaccumulatesinbonesandteethasamajorfractionofnoncollagenousboneproteinsBIOLOGically,studieshavedemonstratedthatFetuin-Aisthemajorcalcificationinhibitorfoundincirculation,whereitinterfereswithcalciumsaltprecipitation.RecentstudyhasindicatedthatFetuin-Aleveldropsinuremicpatientsonhemodialysisincomparisontonormalhealthycontrols.ThelowFetuin-Alevelinpatientswithchronickidneyfailurestronglyassociateswithahighercardiovascularmortality.Ontheotherhand,itisdemonstratedthatahigherthannormalserumFetuin-Ainolderpopulationassociatesincidentdiabetes,whichisindependentfromotherMarkersofinsulinresistance.Further,ahigherFetuin-Alevelmaybeanindependentriskmarkerofpatientswithforcardiovasculardiseases
