Estriol(alsoOestriol)isoneofthethreemainestrogensproducedbythehumanbody.Itisonlyproducedinsignificantamountsduringpregnancyasitismadebythefetus.Duringpregnancytheproductionofestrioldependsonanintactmaternal-placental-fetalunit.Fetalplacentalproductionofestriolleadstoaprogressiveriseinmaternalcirculating
levelsreachingalategestationalpeakseveralordersofmagnitudegreaterthannon-pregnantlevels.Inthematernalcirculation,estriolundergoesarapidconjugationintheliver
followedbyurinaryexcretionwithahalf-lifeofabout20minutes.Sincenormalestriolproductiondependsonanintactmaternal-placental-fetalcirculationandfunctionalfetalmetabolism,maternalestriollevelshavebeenusedtomonitorfetalstatusduringpregnancy,particularlyduringthethirdtrimester.
