CD109isaglycosyl-phosphatidyl-inositol(GPI)-anchoredglycoproteinsizedabout180-190kDa.IthasbeenshownthatCD109isexpressedinvascularendothelialcells,someepithelialcells,activatedT-cellsandplatelets,andasubsetofCD34+megakaryocyticleukemiacells.TheCD109moleculesarestronglyexpressedinKG1acells,whileCD34+CD109+cellsinfetalbonemarrowincludealmostallmyelocytic,erythroblasticandmegakaryocyticprecursorcells.Forthisreason,CD109isconsideredtobeaMarkerofmegakaryocytichematopoiesisinearlystage.FurThermore,CD109isconsideredtobedifferentfromexistingactivationmarkersofleukocytesandplatelets,becauseofitsstructureandSEROlogicalfeatures.
