Interleukin-13isaTh4-typecytokine,secretedfromCD4(+)Tcells,mastcells,basophilsandeosinophils.TheIL-13genegeneratesaclusterwithotherTh4-typecytokinessuchasIL-4andIL-5.IL-13isanimmunoregulatorycytokineandakeymediatorinthepathogenesisofallergicinflammation.ItmediatesitseffectsbyinteractingwithacomplexreceptorsystemcomprisedofIL-4RalphaandtwoIL-13bindingproteins,IL-13Ralpha1andIL-13Ralpha2.IL-13receptorsareexpressedonhumanBcells,basophils,eosinophils,mastcells,endothelialcells,fibroblasts,monocytes,macrophages,respiratoryepithelialcells,andsmoothmusclecells.However,functionalIL-13receptorshavenotbeendemonstratedonhumanormouseTcells.ThusunlikeIL-4,IL-13doesnotappeartobeimportantintheinitialdifferentiationofCD4TcellsintoT(H)2-typecellsbutratherappearstobeimportantintheeffectorphaseofallergicinflammation.TheimportantroleofIL-13inthepathogenesisofbronchialasthmaaswellasotherallergicdiseaseshasbeenrecognized,basedmainlyonanalysesofmousemodels.
