CD23isdescribedasa45kDaproteinfoundonthesurfaceofIgMbearingBcells,eosinophils,macrophagesandsomeTandNKcells.ItisalsofoundonEBV-transformedBcells.Additionally,areleasedformhasbeendescribed.WhenfirstreleasedtheCD23moleculeis35kDa;however,thisformisquicklycleavedtoobtainthemorestable,solubleformwhichis25kDainsize.RecentlythestructureoftheCD23moleculewascharacterizedbycloningandsequencingtechniques.SolubleCD23hasbeenshowntobetheBcellgrowthfactor(BCGF).SolubleCD23isalsoreferredtoasBlast-2andasthelowaffinityIgEreceptor(FCeRII).IthasbeenspeculatedthatCD23mayup-regulateIgEsynthesisinconjunctionwithTcellpromotedinterleukin-4;however,thespecificphysiologicroleofthismoleculeisnotyetwellunderstood.ElevatedlevelsofCD23havebeenfoundinresearchstudiesofsamplesfrompeoplewithBcell-derivedChronicLymphocyticLeukemia(B-CLL),withHyperIgESyndromeandpost-BoneMarrowTransplantationsamples.CD23levelsmaybeproventorelatetodiseasecourseinHairyCellLeukemia(HCL).
