AnnexinVwasfoundtoplayamajorroleinmatrixvesicle-initiatedcartilagecalcificationasacollage-regulatedcalciumchannel.AnnexinVspreferentialbindingpartnerisphosphatidylserine(PS).PSispredominantlylocatedinmembraneleaflets,whichfacethecytosol.However,recentfindingsshowthateachcelltypehasthemolecularmachinerytoexposePSatitscellsurface.Thismachineryisactivatedduringtheexecutionofapoptosis.OncePSisexposedatthecellsurfaceitexhibitsprocoagulantandproinflammatoryactivities.AnnexinVwillbindtothePS-exposingapoptoticcellandcaninhibittheprocoagulantandproinflammatoryactivitiesofthedyingcell.ThesefindingstogetherwiththepresenceofAnnexinVintheextracellularspacedepictanovelpathophysiologicalsignificanceforAnnexinVinvivo.
