Thesteroidhormonealdosteroneisapotentmineralcorticoidthatisproducedbythezonaglomerulosaoftheadrenalcortexintheadrenalgland.Thesynthesisandreleasearecontrolledbytherenin-angiotensinaldosteronesystem(RAAS),aswellasbyplasmapotassiumconcentration,thepituitarypeptideACTH,andbythebloodpressureviapressuresensitivebaroreceptorsinthevesselwallsofnearlyalllargearteriesofthebody.Aldosteronebindstomineralocorticoidreceptors(MR)andtriggersthetranscriptionofhormoneresponsivegenes.Inconsequence,aldosteroneincreasesthebloodpressurebyreabsorptionofsodium,andwaterfromthedistaltubulesofthekidneyintotheblood,secretionofpotassiumintotheurine,andelevationofcirculatingbloodvolume.Chronicoverproductionandsecretionofaldosteroneleadstohypertension.
