Theinterleukin-1(IL-1)speciesrepresentanimportantfamilyofBIOLOGicallyactivemononuclearcell-derivedproteinswhichareinvolvedininflammatoryreactionsandinimmuneresponses.TwodistincthumanIL-1species,IL-1alphaandIL-1beta,havebeenidentified.Theysharesimilaritiessuchasthesamemolecularweight,similarbiologicaleffectsandthesamereceptorsontargetcells.Theirbiologicalpropertiesincludepyrogenicity,boneresorption,presentationofantigentoTcellsandstimulationofBandTlymphocyteproliferation.ElevatedserumorbloodlevelsofIL-1alphahavebeenfoundinpatientswithtotalhipreplacement/arthroplasties,inpatientswithrecentlydiagnostedIDDM,incaseofseveralcarcinomassuchasheadandneckcancer,pancreaticcancerandthyroidcancer,inexperimentalacutepyelonephritis,inacuteviralhepatitisandinsepticshock.Bothelevationsinserumlevelsandjointfluids(synovialfluids)aredetectedinrheumatoidarthritis.IL-1alphaelevationisaMarkerfordentaldiseasessuchaspulpalinflammationandinfectionsoftherootcanals.Significantlyelevatedconcentrationsingingivalcrevicularfluidinsubjectswithperidantitisaredetected.UrinarylevelsofIL-1alphacorrespondtodiseaseandtherapyresponseinbladdercancer.
